During these workshops, participants will have the opportunity to explore four major themes that reflect Concord’s enduring literary and historical importance.

1. Transcendentalism and the Transcendentalists: The workshop focuses on the writings and activities of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Margaret Fuller, and Louisa May Alcott.
2. Three Transcendentalist Utopias: The Transcendentalist utopian experiments—Brook Farm, Fruitlands, and Walden—are carefully examined, and the sites of each experiment are visited.
3. Social Reform and Social Action: The workshop explores Concord’s role in antebellum reform agitation, especially its involvement in antislavery and abolitionist activities and the women’s rights movement.
4. Material Culture, Manuscripts, and Historic Sites: The workshop stresses the importance of artifacts, historic sites, and manuscript preservation.
